TRAVEL TO LAKE POWELL

Lake Powell is on the Utah-Arizona border.

Options for travel to Lake Powell include flying, driving, or both:

Option 1. Driving

Driving directions are on the maps below.
If you like a long, scenic road trip, this might be the ticket.

Option 2. Flying

To fly to Lake Powell, first fly to Phoenix, AZ (e.g., check the
fares at orbitz.com).    (We typically fly on America West Airlines from
Santa Barbara to Phoenix.  Although it is a lot cheaper flying from LAX, we
prefer to avoid the crowds and hassle at LAX.)

Once in Phoenix, there are usually 3 flights a day to/from Phoenix, AZ and Page, AZ on
Great Lakes Airlines (800-554-5111).    It is about an hour flight and usually
costs about $85 - $100 each way if you book reservations at least 3 weeks in advance.
(Also, here's the link to the City of Page Airport.  Phone: 928-645-4337.)

America West Airlines also has flights to/from Phoenix, AZ and Page, AZ, but you
might check first if it is a direct flight.

Once at the Page, AZ airport, you can take the Wahweap Shuttle van to Lake
Powell Wahweap  Marina, which is free.  It is about a 15 minute drive.
They will pick you up at the airport -- phone them at: 800-528-6154
or 928-645-2433.

If you prefer, there are two rental car agencies at the Page airport.  You might
want to rent a car for 24 hours if you arrive the day before the trip.

  • Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Page Airport: 928-645-1449
  • Avis Rental Car, Page Airport: 928-645-2024

Option 3. Both -- flying to Las Vegas or Phoenix, renting a car, and then
driving to Lake Powell

If you are up for a scenic road trip, this is a nice option.  It is about a 5 - 5.5
hour drive from either Las Vegas or Phoenix to Lake Powell.

If you are trying to keep costs down, considering flying into Las Vegas, meeting up
with others who will also be on the houseboat trip, and rent an SUV or van together
that you can share for the drive to Lake Powell.  For example, you might arrive in
Las Vegas early in the morning and drive Lake Powell so that you will arrive in
early to mid-afternoon.  Or, arrive the night before and stay in a hotel on the strip.

Unless you carpool, this probably doesn't save a lot of money compared to simply
flying into Page, AZ tho.

Having a rental car does give you the flexibility to explore Page / Lake Powell,
or nearby attractions such as the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Monument
Valley, etc., by car before or after the houseboat trip.

Consider spending the night before the houseboat trip begins
in a hotel or motel in Page, or, on the houseboat on the buoy.

Spending the night before in Page, AZ is often a good idea to avoid last
minute hassles.  The houseboat will usually embark in the early afternoon --
typically about noon or 1:00 pm.   Also, it gives you a bit of time to explore
Page, AZ, the Glen Canyon Dam, and the Wahweap marina, as well as buy
any items you forgot to bring with you (sundries, water toys, bedding, etc.).

See the Days Inn  or Best Western Lake Powell pages, or the links on the
Links page for other places to stay in Page, AZ.

  • For trips scheduled to depart on a Sunday

We actually can board the houseboat the Saturday before.  If you would
like to spend Saturday evening on the houseboat on the marina buoy,
instead of at a Page hotel or motel, that will work too.  (During the day, tho,
it can sometimes get a bit bumpy from the wakes of boats passing by
in the marina.)

This is a particularly good option if you are bringing a jet ski, ski boat, or
sail boat.  They can be launched from the launch ramp on Saturday afternoon,
tied up to the houseboat, and we can be ready to go earlier in the day on Sunday.

Once you are at the Wahweap Marina:  Getting from shore to the houseboat
on the buoy.

If you need to get from the shore to the houseboat on the buoy (if for some
reason we can't pick you up), there is a free water taxi service: Aramark Executive
Services: 928-645-2433.   If you need to contact us on the houseboat, you
might ask a boater at the launch ramp to hail the "My Little Runaway" houseboat
on their marine radio.
